2008: Tasksy - Timetracking and Invoicing for Freelancers
Tasksy is a time-tracking and invoicing application of which I am the principal developer and maintainer. It grew out of my desire for an application that catered specifically to the needs of freelancers on my scale, and is now accepting users.
This application is built on a standard Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP framework. It utilizes Ajax liberally but not excessively, and its design is focused on usability.
In Production
April 2008: Wildcat Whale Watching
Wildcat is a whale-watching outfit located here in Victoria. Their claim to fame is their namesake, the Wildcat, a sizable and apparently fast catamaran which promises faster, farther whale-watchings than competitors.
This site showcases the photographs taken aboard the boat, utilizing Lightbox.js for the gallery.
Fall 2007/Winter 2008: Evergreen Business Services
Evergreen Business Services (Victoria, BC) rents offices, conference rooms, receptionists, and copy services to visiting business types, small startups, doctors, and the like. This project involves retooling the image and table-heavy existing site into an accessible, xhtml-valid, text- and content- driven, search-engine optimized dynamo.
As a matter of fact, this version already performs better in searches than the existing site, despite the notable handicap of having to content to speak of, one solitary incoming link, and no boost from the domain name, among other things.
Completed Projects
Winter 2008: Folk Art Creative
Folk Art Creative is an idea I had while I was pondering the way peoples' eyes would light up when I told them I did freelance work, and they'd tell me how they thought that was great, and they they themselves enjoyed dabbling in writing or graphic design or programming or whatever, then show me something that made me go "wow".
That (aside from a few secret reasons) is why I launched this project. And in a half-hour at that, INCLUDING logo design, domain name registration and uploading.
March 2008: Brian Lynn Feldenkrais
Brian Lynn teaches Feldenkrais, a method of therapy revolving around controlled body movements. It's sort of like yoga, but under penalty of correction decidedly not yoga.
This site was built on Wordpress, to allow the client the ability to edit the site and add or remove pages easily. It also allows for future expansion into weekly publishing quite easily; I'm told that Brian is a prolific writer.
Fall 2007: UVic FASD Research
Created for the researchers of Fetal Alcohol Spectral Disorder within the University of Victoria, this site projects a solemn but hopeful facade, after some small issue with an unduely cheerful-looking early draft.
The old site will be available as a template, after some cleaning up.
Fall 2007: Cafe Philosophy
Cafe Philosophy meets weekly to discuss the meaning of life, love, and other fun things. With the client having such a specific idea of layout and general aesthetics, this job involved less design and much, much more Drupal tinkering than other entries in this motley list. Highlights of this site include a custom module written to handle the batch uploading, displaying and listing of past, present, and future topics for discussion at the cafe.
To tell you the truth, I'm not a big fan of how the site looks, but the client is. I myself am proud of how it works.
Winter 2007: UVic ACE Club
Done pro-bono at the behest of fellow members, this site exhibits a one-column design and minimal graphics. Site navigation was based on the previous version. In addition to the design, a small, custom-made CMS was implemented in PHP that gave less technical group members the ability to add news to the site.
It was infrequently used.
